If you are a Canadian citizen, you will need a visa to enter China. While we do take care of the majority of travel arrangements, please note that you will be responsible for obtaining any visas necessary to attend the trip. We recommend calling your local embassy to find out the visa requirements necessary to travel to this location and to start any processes necessary asap, as you don’t want to be rushing or paying express service fees at the last minute! That being said, we will send you the documentation you require when submitting you visa application. We also partner with agencies who can assist in the visa application process. 🙂

Safety is EMP’s main concern, and since we go to exotic locations, it’s important to educate yourself on any of the cultural or legal differences found in the countries you are visiting.

EMP helps you along the way by:

  1. Partnering with local suppliers that understand the differences between Canada and the country being visited. This allows them to focus on making sure that you are safe, and making sure that you understand what precautions need to be taken in that given location. Your guides are also locals who understand how to stay safe in that area.
  2. Taking you to safe locations within the country that have the tourism infrastructure required to ensure you are secure or have enough security when you are attending.
  3. Notifying the Canadian Embassy of your visit so they are aware that you are traveling within the country.
  4. Providing you with a pre-departure package so that you go to the country prepared with an understanding of what to expect and what the do’s and don’ts are of the country you are visiting.
  5. Booking you in 3+ star hotels in safe areas instead of lower-end accommodations or hostels.

Flights

Your flight is often booked a few months prior to departure. Once we provide you with your booking number, you will be able check into your flight.

Most airlines provide you with access to check in 24 hours prior to your departure. To check in:

  1. Go to the airline’s website (We recommend search airlines’s name manage my booking
  2. Type in your booking reference number (can be a alpha/numeric code) and any other information asked (some airlines ask for your last name, departure city, etc)
  3. Follow the instructions to check in
  4. Print your boarding pass/ email it to yourself

*Some airline’s do not allow you to check in prior to departure. If this is the case, you will be required to check in at the airport.

It is recommended to be at the airport at least 3 hours prior to departure to deposit any checked luggage, go through security, and head to the gate. Airline’s may refuse to board you if you are late for your check in, so it’s important to be on time! 🙂

In general, it is important that the airline ticket has your name written exactly as it is in your passport. If your ticket does not match your passport, the airline has the right to prevent you from boarding. Often name changes often cost additional fees, so it’s best to make sure your name is correct when writing it on our form.

That being said, there are a few cases where you may see a few differences on your boarding pass that are fairly normal:

Missing letters on your boarding pass: It is not abnormal to see a few letters missing off your boarding pass – especially if you have a longer name. Depending on the airline, a set amount of characters may be allowed on the boarding pass.

No spaced between your names: Some airline system remove spaces from your name – this isn’t anything to worry about.

If you see any of these discrepancies between your boarding pass and your passport, it’s important to either contact the airline directly, or contact us, to ensure your name is correct in the airline’s system.  🙂

FICAV stands for (in french) “Fonds d’Indemnisation des Clients des Agents de Voyages” or compensation fund for customers of travel agents.

The Emerging Markets Project’s head office is located in Montreal, Quebec, which means that we are regulated by Quebec travel laws. All travel companies in Quebec are required to collect this fee which amounts to 0.10% of your total bill. In simple terms, the money collected goes into a Fund administered by the Government of Quebec and is used to compensate travelers when the company they book with isn’t able to provide the services you paid for or give you a refund (even if you live in a different province). It essentially gives travelers extra insurance that their travel company will fulfill its obligation to provide you with the service that you booked! All the more reason to travel with us! 🙂

Participating in a Project

No! Anyone who is interested in the countries we visit, emerging markets in general, culture, and/or international business is encouraged to apply to take part in our tours. The program is targeted more specifically at individuals aged 18-35 years old – your background and experience are not important as long as you are excited and eager to learn.

There’s no scholarships or funding for projects available directly through EMP at the moment. The program fee is already a reduced fee because we do understand the restraints of a student budget. You can always check with your University or Student Association, and see if there’s maybe any programs available through the university. Some universities may offer funding (related to educational initiatives). If you do apply for funding and need documentation, we can definitely help you out! If that’s the case, please let us know.

No! We have two types of tours – tours that have a university/college name on them are reserved exclusively for students of that educational institution. If you want to travel with a friend or someone you know on one of those tours, please contact us.

All other tours are open to the general public.

Yes, you must be 18 or older to qualify for an EMP tour.

We’re always looking for new partners! Please contact us to tell us all about your university/college.

If you’d like to fly from our destination to a different country, or even just stay a bit longer, we’ll take care of booking your flights. We give priority to people currently residing in Canada (including student and work visas and permanent residency) but do accept applications from anywhere in the world. Please note that all prices on our website are in Canadian Dollars.

We also organize a pre-departure meeting (in person or online meeting) so you can talk to everyone who’s going on the trip before you leave, and ask any questions you might have before departing.

Yes. Once you’ve been accepted on an EMP tour, you’ll receive an email with a link to make your payment. Here, you’ll choose the city you’d like to fly from and to. Note that you may need to leave/return a day earlier or later depending on your city choices. Any customizations are subject to price differences due to different flight costs.

Vaccines are your responsibility. Make sure to do some research because requirements depend on your country of citizenship. As a general rule, try and keep all of your routine vaccinations up to date.

If you’re a Canadian citizen, the Government of Canada has a list of vaccines they recommend for each country on their website. They are usually listed as either mandatory or recommended. If you feel uncertain whether you should get the recommended vaccines, make an appointment at a travel clinic or with your family doctor and review the tour itinerary with them.

Yes, this is possible! Just let us know when placing your deposit and we can arrange this for you. However, our rates are based on double occupancy because we try to keep our rates as low as possible for you! If you prefer to room alone throughout the tour,  additional charges will apply.

The final itinerary will be released no later than 2-3 before your projects departure date. During this time period, we’re hard at work making sure the itinerary is tailored to everyone who’s going on the trip.

The amount of spending money you choose to bring depends on the amount of you plan to spend on your non-included meals, souvenirs or anything else you might wish to purchase throughout the project. A general amount that would be suggested is $300-500 for your meals and extras. If you are planning to shop, you might want to bring a bit more! Tips are not currently included in the project fee, and we recommend bringing $10 a day, which is split between your guides and bus drivers.

Travel

Yes! Just let us know when you’re filling in your deposit after being accepted. We’ll reduce the price accordingly! You can always contact us beforehand to get a quote without the flight.

Yes! Once you’re accepted on an EMP tour, you’ll be sent a form to fill out your details so we can book your flight. There will be space for you to let us know exactly what your travel plans are. EMP is a registered travel operator in Canada and as a result, we can help you book your entire trip if you need the help. If you’d like to fly from our destination to a different country, or even just stay a bit longer, we’ll take care of booking your flights. You won’t need to pay any extra fees, only the cost of the flight itself!

The final itinerary will be released no later than 2-3 before your projects departure date. During this time period, we’re hard at work making sure the itinerary is tailored to everyone who’s going on the trip.

Application Process

Our application process is in place because we want to know exactly why you want to experience an EMP tour. When you travel with us, you’ll be touring exclusive local and international businesses, and living an ultimate business trip. We want to make sure that this type of trip is the right kind of tour for your travel preferences and career aspirations!

We look for aspiring professionals – people who are ambitious and excited to learn more about emerging markets, culture, and/or international affairs. Our trips are the perfect balance of businessand fun, which means that you need to be professional at times, especially when meeting with local professionals and organizations.

You don’t need experience in traveling or in business. You don’t need a specific degree (or GPA if you’re a student). If you’re eager to travel with a purpose and learn; if you’re very interested in the countries we visit or the program in general, we want to hear from you!

Note the application deadline for the project(s) that you’re applying for. You will receive an answer not later than 1 week after that deadline, if not sooner. We read carefully through all applications and make sure we accept dynamic groups that will travel well together! Don’t worry, you’ll hear back from us whether you’re accepted or not! If you’ve been waiting for longer or you have questions while you wait, don’t hesitate to email us at: info@emergingmarket.ca.

Once you’ve been accepted, you’ll receive an email confirming your spot on the tour and a link to pay your $400 deposit securing your place. We use this deposit to begin booking your flights and accomodations.

From there, we’ll give you a call to better understand your travel requirements, ask you for more information before we book your flights, and help set you up on a payment plan if you need one.

Yes! We understand that life can get busy. Please email us at info@emergingmarket.ca to let us know which project you’d like to apply to. If there’s still open spots for that project, we can send you an application form so you can still apply.

We give priority to people currently residing in Canada (including student and work visas and permanent residency) but do accept applications from anywhere in the world. Please note that all prices on our website are in Canadian Dollars.

Many of our travellers don’t know anyone else who’s attending the trip – at first. A few months before departing, we will organize and invite you to a Facebook group with your fellow travellers so you can all introduce yourselves and get to know each other. We also organize a pre-departure meeting (in person or online meeting) so you can talk to everyone who’s going on the trip before you leave, and ask any questions you might have before departing.

Yes, definitely! We understand that travelling for first-time travellers can be a nerve-wracking (but exciting!) experience. Attending an Emerging Markets Project is a perfect opportunity for your to get out of your comfort zone. You’ll be travelling alongside experienced travel guides and tour leaders! This will allow you to ease into the world of travelling alongside those who know the ins and outs of the travel world.

Flights

Here are some things we recommend you keep in mind when packing for your flight. While we do send you your flight information, some of this information can only be found on your airline’s website!

  • What is the baggage allowance for my flight (we will send you this information, but you can check the airline’s website for more detail)
  • What items can I not bring on the plane (check out the CATSA website for a full list of items)
  • Where should I store my portable charger (this will depend on the airline, so we recommend checking with the airline directly)
  • What should I pack in my carry on (we will provide you with a list in the predeparture guide!)

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at any point and we will be happy to help!

Yes! Before we book your hotel and other accommodations, we’ll give you a call to check and see if there’s anyone you’d like to room with throughout the trip. You can also request to sit next to someone on the flight. We’ll accommodate your request(s) to the best of our ability.
